Episode 32: Dr. Scott Solomon - Are Humans Still Evolving?

June 6, 2017
Dr. Scott Solomon, @ScottESolomon is an evolutionary biologist, ecologist, science writer, and professor at Rice University. His writing has been featured in Slate, Nautilus, Wired.com, and Business Insider. His most recent book is aptly titled "Future Humans: Inside the Science of Our Continuing Evolution," in which he analyzes and answers the principled question: Are humans still evolving?

If evolving, how will humans look in 100,000 years? What role do epigenetics play in modern day diseases? If we colonize Mars, how will the change in gravity and atmosphere affect our biology? Will humans on Mars diverge from those on Earth? These are some of the questions we came into this episode pondering

Dr. Solomon takes the bus down a winding and twisting road to help us better understand how evolutionary biology is impacting modern day and future life on this planet. He provides explanation and insight into some of the mechanisms that effect evolution; mate selection, disease, and culture.

Don't worry - the bus doesn't stop there. After we breeze past those topics the discussion broadens into some more arcane fields. The bus discusses the effects of bacteria on health and the gut-biome, the potential of virtual reality to evolutionary pressures, CRISPR and genetic sequencing's potential, and whether online dating is messing up natural sexual cues in the search for a mate.

This episode was an INCREDIBLE episode all around. The coup de grace is a lasting discussion on the colonization of Mars. Dr. Solomon helps us better understand how humans living on Mars could diverge from those on Earth. Its quite thorough and fun.

Looking for another science episode? We spoke with Michael Hinden extensively about botany and epigenetics in Episode 026. Listen to it here.

Episode 031: Lauren Sesselmann - The Woman Behind the Cleats

May 25, 2017

Lauren Sesselmann @lsesselmann is a defender for the Canadian national soccer team and plays in the new NWSL (National Woman's Soccer League). She won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics and a gold medal in the 2011 Pan-America Games at Guadalajara.

Lauren is more than just a hard-working athlete. She is a fitness instructor (just releasing her second Fit as a Pro program), a mentor - focusing on helping younger girl athletes find success in sports, a growing influencer via social media, an actress, and TV host.

Soccer is the most prolific sport around the world and reaching new heights in North America. But woman's soccer, though growing rapidly, is still stuck with a negative stigma in the quality of play. The bus and Lauren challenge this notion while exploring woman's sports science and injury recovery compared to men's (such as ACL tears are greater during menstrual cycles).

This episode not only explores Lauren's injuries and experiences as a woman in sports, it also takes a look into her depression and coinciding new confidence and creativity as she approaches retirement. Lauren's passion is mentoring and we also talk about everything from racism and sexism to nutrition, dating, social media, acting, and her side projects.

Lauren was one of the most fun people we've had in the studio thus far. She is intelligent, motivational, hard-working, insightful, funny, and has no problem pointing out the bus driver being in love. You're going to absolutely love this show.

This episode we learned some of the same struggles we had from a previous Olympic hopeful, Jared Firestone. Take a look at his episode here if you'd like to listen to another sports topic.

Episode 026: Michael Hinden on Botany, Buds, and Education

April 22, 2017

Michael Hinden took a chance and moved out to California during the medical marijuana gold rush. He sought after his passion for botany and plants and left behind a job in his father's law firm.

Michael and his company Private Stock Veganics are in a pursuit to provide the highest grade cannabis-derived from truly natural and organic techniques. He's made a brand that's respected for its quality above all else. They are on a mission in order to bring the marijuana industry back to a more natural approach to raising their plants.

This episode isn't just about plants. The boys cover an array of topics from education, technologies, medicine, mimicking aspects of homo sapiens, as well how to return to cohesion between humans and animals.

Looking for another show about the marijuana business or drug politics? We had a conversation with Danny Perdeck (CEO of Green Roads World) talking the growing CBD and Marijuana industries.

Episode 025: Jared Firestone - Sacrifice

April 18, 2017

Jared Firestone,@jfireskeleton, is an ex-collegiate track athlete attempting to break into the ranks of the U.S. Skeleton and Bobsled teams.  He recently just returned from the U.S. Nationals and is currently preparing for training sessions with the Elite Development Group in Latvia and Norway.

Jared ran track at Tulane and after college, he wasn't willing to give up on his athletic dreams. After watching skeleton one T.V. one day, he took a leap of faith to jump-start his career.

As with many of our guests, Jared has had to show extreme determination, risk, and sacrifice to make the impossible - possible. He has had to forgo his law career and has had difficulty finding a stable job that will support him while he trains. And beyond the potential for failure, skeleton is a dangerous sport. To Jared, the risk is worth the reward.

This episode explores the psyche of a strong-willed and determined young man not willing to accept mediocrity. We also talk skeleton training techniques, the potential of athletes as influencers in the 21st century, and intangibles of success.

Episode 024: Shane Mauss – Openness, Psychedelics, and Questioning Everything

April 11, 2017

Shane Mauss is both a stand-up comedian from rural Wisconsin and a connector. He’s breaking social barriers by bridging the gap between the inner psyche and who we are as human beings.

"My default is that I am always questioning everything”

Shane has been featured on Comedy Central Presents, Conan, and Jimmy Kimmel. He has a Netflix special titled ‘Mating Season and a comedy album titled My Big Break, which spent time at #1 on comedy Itunes charts, and which he wrote after breaking both feet. Shane is also the host of the Here We Are Podcast, in which he interviews experts in science and academics to decipher the human experience.

He’s currently embarking on his A Good Trip - A Psychedelic Comedy Tour. In fact, we reached out to Shane because we found his show to be the funniest stand-up we've seen in years... and as psychonauts, directly and perfectly relatable on all fronts. The reason he came up for the tour is just as interesting as the tour itself, and he divulged this in the conversation.

This episodes' first portion plunges deep into the relationship between psychedelics and humanity. We explore Shane's personal experiences (hint: he's not your DMT guru) and their effect on society, as well as augmenting experience through nootropics and biohacking.

The show becomes a thoughtful exploration of openness through many sources (delics, meditation, youth) and fearfulness - and connects how we can utilize acceptance to finding many solutions.

Please enjoy this conversation with fellow Psychonaut, Shane Mauss.

Looking for another show about openness? Our conversation with Bryan Shay – The Live High Campaign, talks Ayahuasca and conforming in society

Episode 023: Philosophy and Bio Hacking of Inflammation

March 30, 2017

In this episode – Brandon and Daniel dive deep into the realms of inflammation and the human body. As biohackers and social incubators, we are in a constant flux of self-improvement through physical awareness and experimentation, and of course, we always want to help others improve their nutrition.

This episode is a little different and here’s why; Daniel Blum’s degree is Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida and Brandon Reese is a Nutritionist and ex-Professional basketball player from Syracuse. With our backgrounds, and since many topics on the show are related to nutrition, we decided to create a mini-series with a discourse on relevant nutritional topics between ourselves.

Today’s episode includes an introduction into the definition of inflammation as well as a philosophical take. There’s a ton of goodies in this show with some of our best sources of inflammation and tips on how to experiment with your own body.

If you enjoy this new episode, please let us know. Leave a review – subscribe – email us – and let us know what you enjoyed about it.

Episode 021: Tatum Skipper - How to be a Boss Ass Bitch and Travel the World

March 14, 2017

Tatum Skipper @bonvoyage_bitches is a travel blogger known for her unique and sassy writing style that utilizes offensive language, brutal honesty, and a perspective opposing what most in her industry blog about. This is why she is crushing it.

Hailing from Atlanta, Ga. She has won a trip to the French Alps, sky dove in Dubai, lived lavishly through Europe and just recently started building out her RV. She's been queened as a "Professional Partier" and shows people that you can travel the world however you want.

There is something uniquely refreshing about someone willing to forgo the facade of perfection while traveling to bring you the no bullshit version. Let's face it, no trip on the road goes as planned. So Tatum is building her BonVoyage Bitches brand through honesty and leaving bad reviews (just kidding - but she will blog about it).

This episode becomes a montage on how to be different in the travel world. We discover how she uses blogging groups and optimization to grow her following and her biggest trick (Hint Hint: Pinterest). What a wild adventure this really was.

You can find Tatum's blog at bonvoyagebitches.com where she writes about places that don't suck and has a segment we love called The Confessional; where you can read about and share crazy, embarrassing, disgusting and just down right dirty horror stories that have happened while traveling.

Episode 019: Darryll Fish - The Power of Awareness

March 1, 2017

Darryll Fish aka DFish (@darryllfish) is a 31-year-old professional poker player known not only for his skills at the tables but his shrewd social awareness and community building. He spends his time traveling the world playing both tournaments and cash games.

Some of his career highlights include a WSOP Circuit victory in Palm Beach Florida, 2nd place at WPT Montreal, and 3rdplace in the 2013 WSOP $5,000 bracelet event. He is sponsored by Seminole Hard Rock and has recently found himself doing commentary for live stream play-by-play.

His experience playing a game that focuses on the emotions and nuances of his opponents has opened up awareness in other areas of his life (more on this in the show).  Darryll can elegantly connect and engage people from different walks of life inconsequential conversation.

This episode becomes a deeply meaningful conversation that explores the ego (such as Darryll’s poker ego) and different forms of social connection. We do a lot of critical analysis on the generational divide between millennials and their parents while discussing those different mindsets and searching through solutions to work out the differences.

Highlights from this episode include Darryll’s recent poker trip to Australia, resolving deep-rooted pain from childhood, and some tricks for setting intentions.

You can see one of Darryll’s most important poker hands at his 2nd place WPT Montreal finish here.

This is our second episode featuring a professional poker player and there were some interesting similarities and differences between the conversation with Adam Levy and Darryl.

Episode 018 : Joe Skipper - Crickets and Other Alternative Protein Sources

February 21, 2017
Sustainability. Sustainability. Sustainability.

It's a topic that is on the tip of many tongues and debated
across an array of industries, especially on buses.

The real question, though, one that we often forget to ask.
What can I personally do, engender a sustainable planet?

This week's guest Joseph Skipper - who also goes by the nickname
Cricket Guy - literally quit his job one day to farm Crickets.
His reasoning? A deep inner yearning to farm coupled with a
desire to create a viable impact on our planet. He is now owner of Seginus Farms @seginusfarms, first urban cricket farm in Florida devoted exclusively to raising human-grade entomological products

Joe recognized that crickets are a sustainable and healthy
source of protein just now starting to be eaten in
The United States. Outside of the U.S. crickets are eaten by billions of people
as both a major source of protein and a delicacy. He wants
to capitalize on a potentially huge growing market while also creating
a positive environmental impact.

In this episode, we talk all things bugs. Heck, we even eat
a few on air. Joe talks insect eating regulations, their
diet, and his experience at the Insect Eating Convention
in Detroit. Among other things - this conversation obviously
becomes a great one about nutritional hacking.

You can find out more @seginusfarms and you can also purchase
the prized Moringa Cricket Power Mix (which we love and use) to make Cricket Brownies.

Here is a good article to learn about the power of cricket protein or visit Grubbly Farms the company from Forbes 30 under 30 positively
impacting the chicken feed industry.

Since we are on a role here with alternative nutrition and medicine.
Our most recent conversation with Danny Perdeck, Owner of Green Roads
World explores how CBD oil provides health hacks.
