#052 - Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez - Musical Influencers of Ecuador

February 7, 2018
00:0000:00

Although music is known for breaking barriers and merging communities the cost to learn and own musical equipment still prohibits many from recognizing their full musical potential. Quito is one prime example of this with the Statue of The Virgin Mary historically dividing north and south, rich and poor.

El Musican Project was founded, by Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez in order to break down these barriers and allow music to serve its true purpose. From offering scholarships to lower-income students to partnering with companies such as The Numa Project, which seeks to build low-cost musical equipment out of recyclable goods. This isn’t just a goodwill project these guys are looking to personally inject a stronger musical culture and. Community into not just Quito but all of Ecuador itself.

In the episode, we discuss everything from the historical aspects of music cultures from Ecuador and Latin America to socio-economic and cultural issues facing Ecuadorians today.

This episode was recorded at IMPAQT hub in Quito, Ecuador. Not only did we sit down with Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez but we also sat down with one of their lead musicians JD Villacis.

Episode 027: Zach Weinberg - The Evolution of Media in Big Music and the Marleys

April 28, 2017
00:0000:00

The Bus talks with Zach WeinbergHead of New Media at Tuff Gong Worldwide - Ziggy Marley's record label. Music is evolving rapidly as social media and new streaming tools converge... and Zach is sitting at the forefront of this evolution. Besides new media, Zach is also one of the historians for the Marley estate and their licenses and works with major industry leaders like Universal Music, WME, and others.

"Music is a marketing tool," in this day and age and this leaves many questions about where the industry is headed, for artists, consumers, and marketers alike. Such questions as: How will music evolve and survive in the day of low-cost streaming? How do we find new fans through rapid changing market preferences? What are technologies coming out to disrupt the market?

There is another battle going on though; the battle between art and making that art seen by the world. So how do you merge raw talent with what the market wants - without removing their artistic integrity? These are just a few of the many questions we ponder in this episode.

As with all of our guests - we explore Zach's love and interest in his occupation and how he reached his current role. This bus ride also explores the potential for A.I in the music industry. As a coup de grace to an incredible episode... Zach gives us some historic and detailed cognizance into the rise of Bob Marley.

This is an interesting take on the social + marketing side of music.  We also had a conversation with Joe Silberzweig, marketing manager for Live Nation and festival promoter extraordinaire that you can check out if you enjoyed this conversation.

Episode 012: Troy Wiggins - Reggae and Wise Words

December 27, 2016
00:0000:00

Music is Emotional. And musical creation elicits emotional responses. But what is the inspiration behind a song? And what about its lyrics? Cue Troy Wiggins.

Troy is the Drummer from Reggae band - Roots of a Rebellion (R.O.A.R.), based out of Nashville, TN. A grassroots band with 6 members, Roots of a Rebellion just played at Bonnaroo Music Festival and released their second album, A Brother's Instinct. Their music can be found on every major platform and their reach extends from America to Europe and the Caribbean.

A thoughtful speaker and songwriter (despite being the drummer), Troy shares an insightful conversation with us about his band’s inception and we were blown away to learn how well they function together behind the scenes. Besides great topics such as augmented reality at music festivals and dread culture, Troy shares some personal moments with his band about a song he wrote for his father.

You can connect with Troy on Instagram @treece_wiggs and on Facebook at Troy Wiggins. You can find the band @rootsofarebellion on Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube.
