#052 - Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez - Musical Influencers of Ecuador

February 7, 2018
00:0000:00

Although music is known for breaking barriers and merging communities the cost to learn and own musical equipment still prohibits many from recognizing their full musical potential. Quito is one prime example of this with the Statue of The Virgin Mary historically dividing north and south, rich and poor.

El Musican Project was founded, by Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez in order to break down these barriers and allow music to serve its true purpose. From offering scholarships to lower-income students to partnering with companies such as The Numa Project, which seeks to build low-cost musical equipment out of recyclable goods. This isn’t just a goodwill project these guys are looking to personally inject a stronger musical culture and. Community into not just Quito but all of Ecuador itself.

In the episode, we discuss everything from the historical aspects of music cultures from Ecuador and Latin America to socio-economic and cultural issues facing Ecuadorians today.

This episode was recorded at IMPAQT hub in Quito, Ecuador. Not only did we sit down with Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez but we also sat down with one of their lead musicians JD Villacis.

#050 - Rabbi Elad Villegas - The Forgotten Jews of the Inquisition

January 25, 2018
00:0000:00

Bello, Colombia. A city historically dominated by a reverent Christian community. Yet whispers throughout the city insist on a different ancestry, one hidden by 500 years of seclusion. Then, over the past 15 years, something strange began to happen. An Orthodox Jewish community, almost out of thin air, emerged within Bello. Where did this community pop up from?

Insert Juan Carlos Villegas, now Rabbi Elad Villegas, the devout man behind the growing Jewish community. A former evangelical pastor, after a work trip to Israel, he became convinced that Judaism was the true way to God. He immediately renounced his pastor-ship and converted to Judaism. Despite his controversial position, Rabbi Elad doesn't persuade anyone to convert to Judaism, rather, he leads by example.

What then is the connection between Bello and Judaism? Many Sephardic Jews converted to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition to hide their identities. They then migrated over to the New World and set up communities under Spain's new colonies (present-day Colombia), losing their original faith in the process. According to the Rabbi, the people of the Antioquia have all the characteristics of the Jewish people, from avoiding a diet with pork to lighting candles on the Sabbath. and he is just helping them rediscover their roots.

Despite his detractors and controversial past, he has proven himself a true servant of Judaism for his community, Comunidad Judia de Antioquia. With recent acceptance of Israel and the surrounding Jewish communities that once rejected their claims, Rabbi Elad has plans to help the community even further (which we discuss in the show).

This episode spans the Rabbi's search for identity, the differences between experienced religions, and outlook of the Comunidad Judia de Antioquia.

As the rabbi speaks Spanish and Hebrew, he had a translator speaking for him. We edited the Rabbi out of the episode for the translation. We're always trying new things here on the bus so let us know your opinion on this style of show. This was filmed and recorded at the synagogue in Bello, Colombia. Check out the YouTube channel for the video version.

Episode 025: Jared Firestone - Sacrifice

April 18, 2017
00:0000:00

Jared Firestone,@jfireskeleton, is an ex-collegiate track athlete attempting to break into the ranks of the U.S. Skeleton and Bobsled teams.  He recently just returned from the U.S. Nationals and is currently preparing for training sessions with the Elite Development Group in Latvia and Norway.

Jared ran track at Tulane and after college, he wasn't willing to give up on his athletic dreams. After watching skeleton one T.V. one day, he took a leap of faith to jump-start his career.

As with many of our guests, Jared has had to show extreme determination, risk, and sacrifice to make the impossible - possible. He has had to forgo his law career and has had difficulty finding a stable job that will support him while he trains. And beyond the potential for failure, skeleton is a dangerous sport. To Jared, the risk is worth the reward.

This episode explores the psyche of a strong-willed and determined young man not willing to accept mediocrity. We also talk skeleton training techniques, the potential of athletes as influencers in the 21st century, and intangibles of success.

Episode 024: Shane Mauss – Openness, Psychedelics, and Questioning Everything

April 11, 2017
00:0000:00

Shane Mauss is both a stand-up comedian from rural Wisconsin and a connector. He’s breaking social barriers by bridging the gap between the inner psyche and who we are as human beings.

"My default is that I am always questioning everything”

Shane has been featured on Comedy Central Presents, Conan, and Jimmy Kimmel. He has a Netflix special titled ‘Mating Season and a comedy album titled My Big Break, which spent time at #1 on comedy Itunes charts, and which he wrote after breaking both feet. Shane is also the host of the Here We Are Podcast, in which he interviews experts in science and academics to decipher the human experience.

He’s currently embarking on his A Good Trip - A Psychedelic Comedy Tour. In fact, we reached out to Shane because we found his show to be the funniest stand-up we've seen in years... and as psychonauts, directly and perfectly relatable on all fronts. The reason he came up for the tour is just as interesting as the tour itself, and he divulged this in the conversation.

This episodes' first portion plunges deep into the relationship between psychedelics and humanity. We explore Shane's personal experiences (hint: he's not your DMT guru) and their effect on society, as well as augmenting experience through nootropics and biohacking.

The show becomes a thoughtful exploration of openness through many sources (delics, meditation, youth) and fearfulness - and connects how we can utilize acceptance to finding many solutions.

Please enjoy this conversation with fellow Psychonaut, Shane Mauss.

Looking for another show about openness? Our conversation with Bryan Shay – The Live High Campaign, talks Ayahuasca and conforming in society

Episode 021: Tatum Skipper - How to be a Boss Ass Bitch and Travel the World

March 14, 2017
00:0000:00

Tatum Skipper @bonvoyage_bitches is a travel blogger known for her unique and sassy writing style that utilizes offensive language, brutal honesty, and a perspective opposing what most in her industry blog about. This is why she is crushing it.

Hailing from Atlanta, Ga. She has won a trip to the French Alps, sky dove in Dubai, lived lavishly through Europe and just recently started building out her RV. She's been queened as a "Professional Partier" and shows people that you can travel the world however you want.

There is something uniquely refreshing about someone willing to forgo the facade of perfection while traveling to bring you the no bullshit version. Let's face it, no trip on the road goes as planned. So Tatum is building her BonVoyage Bitches brand through honesty and leaving bad reviews (just kidding - but she will blog about it).

This episode becomes a montage on how to be different in the travel world. We discover how she uses blogging groups and optimization to grow her following and her biggest trick (Hint Hint: Pinterest). What a wild adventure this really was.

You can find Tatum's blog at bonvoyagebitches.com where she writes about places that don't suck and has a segment we love called The Confessional; where you can read about and share crazy, embarrassing, disgusting and just down right dirty horror stories that have happened while traveling.

Travel junkie or just plain frugal? One of our most popular episodes was with Kevin Wong - The Invincible Budget - in which he provides tips and tricks on traveling the world for $25/day.
