#052 - Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez - Musical Influencers of Ecuador

February 7, 2018
00:0000:00

Although music is known for breaking barriers and merging communities the cost to learn and own musical equipment still prohibits many from recognizing their full musical potential. Quito is one prime example of this with the Statue of The Virgin Mary historically dividing north and south, rich and poor.

El Musican Project was founded, by Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez in order to break down these barriers and allow music to serve its true purpose. From offering scholarships to lower-income students to partnering with companies such as The Numa Project, which seeks to build low-cost musical equipment out of recyclable goods. This isn’t just a goodwill project these guys are looking to personally inject a stronger musical culture and. Community into not just Quito but all of Ecuador itself.

In the episode, we discuss everything from the historical aspects of music cultures from Ecuador and Latin America to socio-economic and cultural issues facing Ecuadorians today.

This episode was recorded at IMPAQT hub in Quito, Ecuador. Not only did we sit down with Juan Carlos and Diego Mendez but we also sat down with one of their lead musicians JD Villacis.

Episode 015: Bryan Shay - The Live High Campaign

January 23, 2017
00:0000:00

This week we share our first conversation with Bryan Shay, @livehighbry. Bryan is one of the creators of Live High; a platform for storytellers to share their content in order to help awaken and inspire humanity. Live High is about doing what you love, living from your heart, following your passion, and living in the moment. This is a wonderful creed to live by that we echo with the On the Bus ideology.

Bryan’s modest and quiescent disposition are in part credited to his genuine interest in what those around him have to say. He is curious, caring, and passionate about people. And he takes the word sharing to another level. Bryan studied and majored in filmmaking at Ithaca College. His skills have led him to travel different parts of the world to learn from others.

Like many other millennials, he is still on the never ending journey to discovering and improving the self. He is constantly taking on new challenges to find a path of less resistance and have more faith in the moment.

His most recent challenge was monumental (and downright inspiring) to many. He decided to bike ride across the country, 3600 miles from ocean to ocean, with his younger brother; as a way to catch up and bond as adults. The journey shares not only newfound brotherly affection, but a group of elementary school children rooting them on, and the heartfelt stories of many connections along the way.

In this episode, among other things, we get a unique perspective on travel; biking across the country, conforming in society, happiness in relationships, and ayahuasca ceremonies. We also broach the subject of social media’s long-term neural effects and get a round table of opinions. A hefty bus ride!

Episode 014: Adam Levy - In the Mind of a Poker Pro

January 17, 2017
00:0000:00

Adam, known to many as @Roothlus, is a professional poker player who exited a life on Poker’s biggest stage in an attempt to forge a new path. Though he’s taking risks in the entrepreneurial and marketing game these days, it’s his diverse skills from playing Poker and Magic: The Gathering that helped open the floodgates.  He’s quite the social experimenter, has some wild stories from his poker days, and is known to make a stir with his top 10 lists. Plus, he’s just much happier when he can share an opinion or two.

His most celebrated poker achievement undoubtedly had to come back in the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event, where he placed 12th overall. It wasn't just Adams audacious poker play that propelled him to fame but more of his casual celebrity run-ins, with the likes of Phil Hellmuth and Justin Beiber!

We talk about the grass being greener outside Adam's comfort zones as well as the evolution of slang and language through ebonics. This conversation is great for any 20 something year old who thought the best way to optimize his or her's human experience is through fame and fortune.

Episode 009: Logic For Dinner with Aakash

December 7, 2016
00:0000:00
Aakash is somewhat of an anomoly. He dropped out of a Statistics PH.D at Harvard to become a trader. Soon after, despite wild success, he realized that community wasn't for him (we explore this on the show). Since then he has worked for start-ups optimizing online ads and is currently studying music at the Pyramind Music Production School in San Fransisco.

Aakash is an optimizer to the fullest extent. He applies mathmatical inference to even the most mundane of life's decisions. He has hacked loopholes for free food delivery services, near free cell phone costs, and has access to the lowest feasible flight costs to travel the world.

His unyielding passion for music breaks the barrier between emotion and math. Afterall, music is at its core, intervals, patterns and tone to create harmony.

On "Logic for Dinner" we explore some of his past experiences that have made him who he is today. From living in the Amazon with Brazilian nut foraging tribes to transitioning from Trading into Music, together we explore his reasoning for these decisions. He also schools us on some music insight (we thought we knew a litte something) and touches the taboo topic of Universal Basic Income. And, with his help, Brandon and Daniel discover why they even started a podcast to begin with.

Please enjoy this episode with such an articulate speaker.
